Fans of the popular science fiction franchise Star Wars have voted Darth Vader the greatest Star Wars villain of all time. This was revealed in a poll conducted by readers of RadioTimes. com.
The super villain whose popularity has assumed a larger-than-life dimensions ever since the show aired for the first time, topped the list of the franchise’s greatest villains, securing 33 per cent of the total votes cast.
What about the others?
Coming directly below Darth Vader on the list is Sheev Palpatine, also known as The Emperor. He accrued 18 per cent of the votes to finish in second place. The popular villain was portrayed by Ian McDiarmid in multiple Star Wars films.
Grand Admiral Thrawn, Darth Maul and Boba Fett came in third, fourth and fifth place respectively. Each of them finished with 6 per cent of the votes. General Grievous, Greedo, Moff Gideon, Kylo Ren and Grand Moff Tarkin make up the top 10.
The poll was released soon after the death of Dave Prowse, aged 85. Prowse played Darth Vader in the original Star Wars Trilogy. After his death in November, co-star Mark Hamill paid him a glowing tribute, describing him as a kind man who was much more than Darth Vader.
The Ultimate Villain
Giving his own review, RadioTimes. com’s sci-fi and fantasy editor, Huw Fullerton, described Darth Vader as the master and the ultimate villain, saying, “Never underestimate the power of the Dark Side.”
“Over 40 years after he first wheezed his way onto our screens, it’s clear that Star Wars fans’ faith in Lord Vader remains stronger than ever, with a third of the thousands who voted picking him as their favorite villain from the series.
‘Star Wars films and TV series may come and go, but Darth Vader will always be the ultimate villain. Truly, he is the Master,’ he said.
