The Importance of Healthy fats
It seems like so many people in the world see all fats as the same, many consider fats to be life poison!!! This is very far from the truth. We need fats to function and be healthy. However what kind of fats you eat can make a difference to your health.
There are two kinds of fats that exist. they are unsaturated fat and saturated fat.
To put this in the simplest of terms unsaturated fats are in a liquid state at room temperature and saturated fats are in a solid state at room temperature. This is a very simplistic view, but it does make identifying each rather easy.
Now you DO need both kinds of fats in your diet, it is not as simple as eating only one kind and avoiding the other. However that being said the majority of your fat should come from unsaturated fats, or healthy fats.
Why do we need fat in our diet?
The body needs fats in order to provide energy for the body. This is the main source of energy that we have, also it is the main way the body has to store energy for use at a later time.
Besides the energy aspect of fat, it also plays a role in the function of the body. Without fat you would not be able to absorb certain needed elements such as fat suluable vitamins (A,D, E and K) as well as many antioxidants. It is also important on a cellular level in terms of cell structure.
In terms of specifics, we always hear about how important Omega-3 is for the body. I was surprised to see that many people were not aware that Omega 3 is also a fat, it is a form of unsaturated fat, and it is very important for the nervous system as well as heart and brain function.
Eating fats wont make you fat.
I also find it so funny when people see me eating some kind of fat, such as peanut butter on a piece of bread and say that it is going to make me fat. I hear these kind of things all the time, “That food has a lot of fat, so it will make you fat”.
This is not necessarily true. Fat does have more calories, so you do need to be aware of how much you eat. However in a very simplistic view again of things the way you get fat is by taking in more calories then you use… not by what kind of foods you eat.
